It was a heartbreaking loss. After 35 minutes of regulation play and 10 minutes of overtime, the Pino’s Soo Jr. Greyhounds Pee Wee AA lost the championship game in the Humberview Huskies Invitational Tournament after a three-person shootout Sunday.
The championship game against the London Jr. Knights saw the Knights score late in the first with the Soo Jr. Greyhounds rebounding quickly with Jackson Zack-Coneybeare finding the back of the net.
In the second period, the Knights scored again late in the period with the Greyhounds firing one back with a goal by Isaac Lennox.
Lucas Stefano then scored during the third period and the team held the lead until the Jr. Knights scored during a scramble in front of the net with only 1.7 seconds of regulation game time remaining.
After a 10 minute overtime of 4 on 4, the Jr. Hounds lost in the thee person shootout, 4-3. In round robin action, the Jr. Greyhounds started action with a 3-2 win over the Humberview Huskies. Holden Brock scored two and Lennox one.
The second game saw the Sault Jr. Greyhounds win the battle against the Leaside Flames 5-2.
Scoring for the Greyhounds were Mark Tassone with a pair and singles by Daniel Mills, Brock and Max Khull.
The Sault Jr. Greyhounds lost their third game 3-1 against the Ajax Knights with Stefano scoring the lone goal but rebounded in the fourth game with a 6-1 solid victory against the Windsor Jr. Spitfires.
Goal scorers there included Nicholas Smith, Zachary Taylor, Darrell Baker, Max Khull, Mark Tassone and Isaac Lennox.
The team, part of the Northern International Hockey League, will face Keewenaw on home ice for a two game series on Oct. 30.
